General Canon G11 Powershot Information

Manufacturer's Description

Capture the exceptional with the ultimate digital compact camera
The PowerShot G11 is designed for the photographer who requires a small compact camera with the features of an SLR. The successor to the multi-award winning PowerShot G10, it not only gives you full manual control but also aperture and shutter priority. You can exposure compensate as well as manually focus to give to complete control over creativity. Known as the Pro's compact the PowerShot G11 gives you not only total control but maximum levels of detail . Features include 5x wide angle (28mm) zoom with optical Image Stabilizer (IS), which greatly reduces blur caused by camera shake, so you can shoot at longer focal lengths and in lower light conditions or at a lower ISO, without the need for a tripod. Add to that Canon's new High Sensitivity 10 Megapixel image sensor, Dual Anti-Noise System, a 2.8-inch Vari-Angle PureColor System LCD and choice of Smart Auto or full manual control and this truly is a groundbreaking, premium quality compact digital camera. No wonder the PowerShot G11 is the favourite compact of professional photographers and photo agencies the world over - and the perfect choice for advanced amateurs.

Dual Anti-Noise system to deal with any light conditions
Canon's new Dual Anti-Noise System expands the range of shooting and allows you to successfully shoot scenes that were previously difficult, particularly in low light conditions. It combines a High Sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel image sensor, which uses the latest technology to increase the area of each pixel on the sensor by approximately 45% and greatly improves the signal to noise ratio, with Canon's enhanced DIGIC 4 image processing technology for improved noise reduction.

The results are spectacular. Camera shake and subject blurring is reduced in dark scenes and flash effective distance is extended so even background of your shot can be reproduced brightly. In scenes with large differences in contrast the dynamic range is greatly improved and highlight blowout and loss of detail in shadows is reduced - for great looking pictures every time.

Overall the Dual Anti-Noise System offers a maximum noise reduction effect (and increase in quality) equivalent to 2-stops over previous models. The system also makes possible a new low light mode that automatically adjusts the maximum ISO speed from ISO 3200 to ISO 12800 so you can capture spectacular 2.5MP images in an astonishing range of difficult low-light conditions that were impossible to shoot before. This makes it easier than ever to take stunning low-light portraits or retain the ambient light detail with late-night landscapes.

The PowerShot G11 also includes a built-in 3-stop Neutral Density (ND) filter and white balance fine control, which enables photographers to more accurately account for variations in natural and artificial light, such as differences in colour tone across various kinds of tungsten light bulbs. The ability to make such fine adjustments in-camera can cut processing time post-shoot - while enabling photographers to be more creative in the field.

Full creative control with RAW + JPEG
The PowerShot G11 includes manual mode that allows you full control over exposure settings so you can really make your photos your own, exploring not only the full potential of this powerful camera but also the limits of your own creativity. You can also shoot in RAW mode, which lets you shoot images without JPEG compression. This gives you clearer images and complete creative control in editing. RAW images are transferred directly to the computer where they can then be edited using image adjustment software or a processing application to adjust your images as you please. The camera can also be set to allow the simultaneous recording of both RAW and JPEG images while shooting.

Intelligent by design for the perfect image
Setting the PowerShot G11 to Smart Auto mode allows the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject. Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions then selects the perfect settings from 22 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image.

With moving subjects - Servo Auto Focus/Auto Exposure (AF/AE) is in constant operation so they always in focus and correctly exposed so you never have to miss a shot, while Motion Detection Technology reduces subject blurring. For close ups the camera automatically switches to macro mode for sharp shots and, no matter what the setting may be, optimum exposure and flash controls ensure your subject is perfectly lit and dark and light areas are accurately reproduced. Photographers can also take advantage of Quick Shot - a shooting method that cuts shutter lag by using the optical viewfinder for focus and framing - so you have the freedom to perfectly shoot fast-paced action.

Large, bright 2.8-inch Vari-Angle LCD
The PowerShot G11 gives you a large 2.8" PureColor System Vari-Angle LCD screen for excellent control when framing your shots. But size is only part of the story. Canon's PureColor System LCD offers spectacular color, resolution and contrast even at an angle. The screen is durable and easy to see and being Vari-Angle it not only allows you to compose your shot at different angles (for example with macro photography) but it's also a perfect feature for gathering friends and family around to see your images.

Optional accessories including Speedlite flashes, underwater housing and Tele-Converter Lens
The PowerShot G11 is compatible with the Speedlite flash series intended for all EOS series SLR cameras. Attach a Speedlite flash to the hot shoe, then you can set and control the flash on the "Flash Control" menu in the camera. With a Speedlight, the G11 is given extra functions such as autoflash metering, FE lock and Flash exposure compensation; continuous shooting with external flash. Also Canon's Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 enables you to have multiple slave flashes and wireless control. A Tele-Converter lens designed for the G11 and WP-DC34 Waterproof Case are also available.

HDMI output for viewing still images on an HDTV
With the advanced PowerShot G11, you can capture breathtaking, high-resolution still images and impressive standard definition movies with ease. The camera also makes it simple to enjoy and share your stills and video movies with a mini-HDMI connector for direct connection to a high-definition monitor or HDTV, so every color and nuance can be appreciated like you intended them to be.

A world of advantages with Canon technology

Rich razor-sharp images - every time
The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon to the most exacting standards - lenses based on over 60 years of experience for outstanding results.

The outstanding quality of Canon lenses is underscored by their use in most broadcast applications. For example programmes like Coronation Street, Casualty and X Factor and nature documentaries like The Blue Planet and Life, as well as the majority of outside broadcasts in the UK, are all recorded using Canon's state-of-the-art broadcast lenses.

Canon's market-leading Optical Image Stabiliser is a lens-shift system that automatically detects and corrects camera shake, whilst ensuring outstanding image quality. It can monitor for movement over 4,000 times per second, allowing handheld shooting at longer focal lengths and in lower light conditions without blur and giving you steady, crisp, brilliant images you'll be proud to shoot and share. Pioneered by Canon for their EOS Digital SLR cameras in 1987 it is the fastest in-lens image stabiliser available on the market (twice as fast as the nearest competitor) and ensures the PowerShot range has a top quality pedigree.

The 5x wide angle optical zoom lens on the PowerShot G11 lets you capture more image in every shot and adds more depth to your photography. Meanwhile a resolution of 10.0 Megapixels allows you to capture every scene in rich detail, ensuring oversize prints - even of cropped pictures - retain high image quality.

Fast, intelligent processing even in tricky lighting conditions
Canon's most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, lies at the heart of every Canon digital camera and delivers exceptional processing speeds, responsive operation and advanced noise reduction. It also makes possible intelligent evolved Face and Object Detection Technology, which finds and tracks moving subjects until you're ready to shoot, adjusting the camera settings for optimal results. Faces will have natural-looking skin tones and additional Blink Detection lets you avoid the disappointment of mis-timed people shots by displaying a 3 second warning if a person in the frame has their eyes closed. Red-Eye Correction is also an integral feature to ensure flawless photos.

A Face Detection Self-Timer also makes group photos and self-portraits easy. Once the shot has been set up, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame when the shutter is depressed and the self timer started - it then waits for an extra face to get in the frame and adjusts focus and exposure before it takes the picture.

DIGIC 4 also makes possible Canon's enhanced i-Contrast feature, which offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions. Available in either shooting or playback mode, i-Contrast analyses the exposure, dynamic range and other image characteristics of a shot then adaptively increases the gain in dark areas to produce heightened detail in those regions. It does this without blowing out correctly exposed parts of the image, while the noise reduction function of DIGIC 4 ensures minimal noise in the adjusted areas.

Looking after your camera

Use a Camera Bag

A camera bag does more than just protect the camera against scratches and dust: It keeps it safe from rain because many are waterproof on the outside.

Be Very Careful Around the LCD Screen and Camera Lens

Use only special equipment to clean your camera’s LCD screen and camera lens. Buy a special cleaning kit that includes liquid solutions, microfiber cloths and brushes that have been specially designed to clean your camera lens.

Never Leave Your Batteries in Your Camera for Too Long
Many camera batteries are now alkaline or lithium formats. If you keep your camera with the batteries inside of it in a moist area, then the batteries can get corrosive. So if you’re thinking about just putting your camera on the shelf for several months, do yourself a favor and remove them.

Turn Your Camera Off Prior to Doing Anything

Before you do anything to your camera, always keep in mind that it should be turned off first. No matter what it is—swapping lenses, changing memory cards or disconnecting or attaching cables—your camera should be turned off.

Cold and Wet Weather Can Wreak Havoc on Your Camera Body
Take your camera out only in a waterproof bag. If the weather’s unusually cold, just wrap your camera in a plastic bag that has silica desiccant packets for the reduction of moisture. It’s also a smart idea to have a soft towel with you to wipe off any moisture, just in case it should get on your camera.

Good Memory Card Care Is Good Camera Care

Only transport your memory cards inside of a protective caseMake sure the memory cards stay dust-free at all times. When removing memory cards, make sure you do so indoors or in non-dusty situations.
Make sure that you keep memory cards only in cool places. Never keep them in places where they may heat up, like dashboards or glove compartments.
Never place your memory cards close to magnetic sources. Examples of magnetic sources are things such as audio speakers, TV monitors and actual magnets.

Use a Filter to Protect Your Camera Lens

The lens of your camera is naturally fragile. As such, it’s susceptible to scratches, cracks, dents…you name it. A UV filter will not only will you give your lens a fighting chance, but you’ll also enhance the quality of your pictures.

Condensation Can Be Controlled

Condensation normally happens when you move your camera between different temperatures.
Allow your camera a chance to naturally get used to the hotter environment. Don’t place it inside a closed plastic bag when transporting it between different temperatures! Just let the camera sit in the humid temperature for a while, until condensation disappears.
If this still doesn’t get rid of all of it, you can utilize a soft cloth to wipe away any remaining moisture and marks left behind from the condensation.
